Great Christmas Tree Tour: Merrie Hansen

Christmas…the most wonderful time of the year! I love everything about Christmas. I love the twinkling of the lights, the shimmer of the tinsel, sending/receiving cards and letters of love, watching sappy holiday movies, reading books of Christmas miracles, and singing carols at the top of my lungs. If the world and my family would let me, I’d leave the tree and decorations up year-round. Christmas music would play without end.

As a little girl, I pushed and prodded my mom to buy a tree—one of those real ones smashed against the grocery store wall. After Dad secured it into the red and green stand, I carefully hung ornaments, and then tossed slivers of silver icicles as high as I could.

When the cards came in the mail, I used straight pins to display them on the window curtain (I don’t know why the curtain). Sometimes they hung in the shape of a tree; other times, they were lined according to size and shape. There were cards and letters from and about people I’d never met. I made certain a card from our family to theirs was sent.

My big sister had a record player with only a few 45 rpm Christmas records, but we played them over and over, year after year. Around my fourteenth birthday, I received my very own stereo and two Christmas LP’s (33 rpm). I still have them; a few years ago my oldest son copied them on to CD’s…scratches and all.

Now, my tree is the biggest artificial my house (and husband) will allow. The decorations which adorn it are old, new, homemade, store-bought, shiny and dull. Slivers of silver icicles are hung with a bit more care. Lighted garland hangs above windows with cards received taped on the wall below.

An annual family letter will be tucked within a Christ centered card for family and friends we haven’t’ seen in years (some my kids have never met). I’ll watch “White Christmas” with Bing Crosby soon. My Kindle library contains a couple books of Christmas miracles to quiet my busy life. And, Christmas music fills the air.

Did I mention that I think “Christmas is the most wonderful time of the year?”

Merrie is a friend in my local ACFW group, and I get to meet her in person for the first time this week! We're having a Christmas get-together at Lorna Seilstad's home. Can't wait! Visit Merrie at her blog: CLICK HERE

  1. Beautiful. Christmas is my favorite time of the year, too. I remember having a showcase of cards spanning the wall. I stopped sending them out long ago, and it appears almost everyone else did too. I only have one this year, and it's from the Septic Pumping Company. Not something I want to display...an ugly truck bordered with holly, and for some reason, it smells bad. *lol*

    Merry Christmas.
