Georgie Lee: Ornaments for Memories

My collection of Christmas ornaments is varied, from Lenox collectibles to some plastic but nice looking teardrops. Mixed in among these common ornaments are a few I’ve purchased over the years to remind me of things that happened during the previous year. This collection of ornaments includes wedding and anniversary ornaments, baby’s 1st Christmas, and sea shells to mark a Caribbean cruise.

The first ornament I purchased to commemorate a special event was my Big Ben ornament. My husband and I had traveled to England for the week of Thanksgiving. We celebrated our own private Thanksgiving at the Pump Room in Bath enjoying high tea. During that week, the Christmas decorations in Britain were just being put out.

As a California girl, it was fun to enjoy the cold weather and a little touch of a Dickens Christmas. However, due to the exchange rate, which didn’t favor us, I was forced to wait until we returned home to purchase my commemorative ornament. I found Big Ben at Cost Plus World Market and had to have it. I hang it on my Christmas tree ever year to remind me of tea in Bath, turkey and cranberry Cornish pasties, cold weather, medieval castles, and a wonderful holiday trip with my husband.

I hope you have a memorable Christmas and a Happy New Year!

  1. I have a few ornaments that I collected from places we have gone, but mostly I collect thimbles from different places.

  2. Love the Big Ben choice. Wish now that we had collected Christmas ornaments when we traveled.

BTW: I like a Regency Christmas novella to round out the season. I'm a big Austen fan. Have you seen "Austenland"? I really enjoyed that movie.

  3. I have a Big Ben ornament, too, to commemorate our trip to London. It is part of a collection of ornaments that represent our travels.
