So how was your 4th of July?

We woke up to a rather warm house. I checked the thermostat and it read 80 degrees. Not a good sign for 6 in the morning. Outside, the air conditioning unit was humming too loudly. We switched off the AC. So, my philosophy on being hot is this: I can stand to be hot if I'm outdoors working. It's supposed to be hot outdoors, and I'm getting something done and keeping busy. So I worked outside all day. I sanded the picnic table on which Jay just replaced the wood, then painted it Midnight Clover. (green) I had more to paint, but that was enough. I weeded and watered.

Jay tolerates the heat better than I do. We had evening plans for dinner and a birthday party, so we ran in and showered. Jay pulled the car out of the garage and had the air on as I got dressed. LOL Yes, I AM a wimp in the heat! We drove to LeighAnn's a nice ride out of town. Note the typical Nebraska scenery above. I took it through the window, I wasn't about to roll it down and let any precious cool air escape!

LeighAnn had prepared Mexican cuisine. Yummy! I took two cheesecakes I'd make earlier in the week and frozen. Erin loves cheesecake. So this weekend, she will officially turn eighteen. That's 18. She'll be a senior in the fall.

I finally got to see Guitar Hero, and I refused to play. I know I'm not that coordinated! I got a little motion sick from the conveyor belt notes that scroll down the screen. (It was the heat I suffered all day - that's my story and I'm sticking to it!)

We came home at dark -- I can't stand to watch my own kids light off fireworks -- and watched the neighborhood displays that get better every year. I think our neighbors are competing with their fireworks displays, and one of them actually coordinates with colors and rhythm like a professional. They gather quite a crowd of cars on their circle, but we only have to sit at the end of our driveway.

So today at 7:45AM the heating and cooling people answered their phones. Dare I hope they could squeeze us in? The nice heaven-sent man was here at 10:15 and restored cool air! YES! Now I can function again. Tonight I will sleep like a baby. A cool baby.

  1. I am glad you got your airconditioning fixed. It is miserable to be in a hot house.

  2. We had a great day but it did rain. My husband was barbequing in the rain.

  3. I spent the day at the hospital with my sister. She went in Monday evening and came home this afternoon. After having some tests done, we were happy to hear that her problems were not serious. She needs to take better care of herself!

  4. I guess I should have said Friday afternoon. I haven't been on the computer much this week because I was at the hospital.

  5. Glad your sister is okay, Carol!

Karen, you lucky duck, seeing Hairspray performed.

My girlfriend Bernadette was in NY 2 weeks ago and saw a broadway play, but not Grease! Can you stand it??

  6. We went to see "Wild Hogs" at the $1.00 theater here in Spokane. Since it was really hot here too, it was good to be in the air conditioning. We grilled hot dogs and watched the Washington D.C. fireworks on T.V. Must be a sign of getting old, watching fireworks on T.V. LOL It was our first holiday with no kids around. Very strange. Empty nest isn't what it's cracked up to be!

  7. For a hundred years I always did all the cooking and planning for holidays, so having adult kids is great. Especially when they invite you for dinner! LOL Occasionally it's nice to have a holiday without any chaos. But then I usually get crazy and plan some.

  8. Oh. And our $1.00 theater isn't only a dollar any more! :-( Inflation!

  9. You are so blessed to have your kids close. Alex is in Japan teaching this summer. Mandy lives in Portland, OR & Jamie is in Helena, MT. Hard to get together for impromptu parties! I asked Mandy once what we did to chase them all away. My wonderful daughter said, "You raised us to be independent, responsible adults." How do you argue with with that? I sometimes want them to be 5 again though and back home with Dennis & me! LOL

  10. I started the day by going to my cities big parade and ended the day watching a near by firework show...and there was lots of great food in between :)

  11. I completely understand about not having your air conditioner!
This month it will be a year since the midwest had the bad storms that wiped out thousands of power lines and left some residents w/o AC for a week! I definitely don't take AC for granted anymore...going w/o it for a week was not fun!

  12. I hear you about wishing they were five again, Betsy. My heart used to just ache to have my kids little. But, you know, there IS a cure -- God planned it perfectly! The cure is GRANDKIDS! And they are double wonderful because you smooch 'em and love 'em when they're babies, spoil 'em when they're toddlers, laugh at the things they do to confound their parents that you remember their parents doing to you, and send them home and still have your own life.

  13. Your right of course Cheryl! And I DO love my grandbabies, but they to are way over in Montana!! Too far to spoil every day like I'd like to. I count myself lucky every time I do get to see them.

  14. I had a wonderful 4th of July. We spent the day in Yellowstone. We drove over to Red Lodge, Montana on the Beartooth scenic drive. That night we watched the fireworks from the balcony of our motel room that looked out over the Yellowstone river.
