The "toad" is a Copes Gray Tree Frog!

LeighAnn did her research. Gray tree frogs are medium-sized tree frogs native to eastern North America. They are fairly common in much of their range near small bodies of water, and are often encountered by humans during the breeding season in spring. There are two separate species of gray tree frog: Hyla chrysoscelis and Hyla versicolor, both of which look identical and can only easily be told apart by their call. In captivity they both require the same care. Adults reach a size of around 2 inches (5 cm). As their common name suggests, most are predominantly gray, although their ventral side is a light white, and on the inside of their hind legs there are two bright orange or yellow flash marks. Gray tree frogs have the ability to change color depending on temperature, humidity, light intensity, and the color of their surroundings. Most are able to change from bright green, to pale white, to dark brown, although most of the time they remain gray. Juveniles are generally green in color and develop their gray adult coloration as they mature.

  1. I can't believe I didn't recognize that as a tree frog! Having lived in FL for many years I've heard and seen many. While I was there in April 'til July of this year they cried for rain...for hours...very loudly. I remember putting up our umbrella years ago and frogs would jump out all over the place and scare me to pieces! I do adore them though. Our cats liked them too. Hee.

  2. Adorable ?? Somehow I find it hard to think of a frog and/or toad as Adorable.
    Orlando Bloom is adorable :)

Amphibians are. . .Icky. Not as bad as spiders, but almost.

  3. Barb, I'm with you about Orlando- he looks yummy as a blond OR brunette, elf OR pirate.

However, I can see a cuteness factor in a frog picture that I may not appreciate in person; toads are another story (pun intended, oh, lady author.)

Mel, nice description- overcome your fear and write! You are a GREAT communicator!! {{Hugs}} Lou

  4. Lou, you are awesome. Thank you heaps. Think I can get Cheryl to come over and hold my hand? Would you? HUGS Backatcha!!
