Caterpillar or Mutant Lizard?

Just looking at these pictures makes me itch.

Check out this creature Jay found on a climbing vine. It was eating leaves. Is this a caterpillar? It's HUGE! If it is, what kind of butterfly will it turn into? My guess is it's a mutant lizard. Jay thought it was cool, but it creeped me out. Ever seen anything like this?

  1. Last summer, something very similar to this nearly destroyed our tomato plants. Only difference, our monster caterpillar had a pair of something--ears, horns, feelers (?)--protruding up from the top of its head.

  2. Devon, those are actually tomato eating worms, and they have yellow and black spots on their head that look like eyes, right? I haven't seen one of those in many years, but I remember they creeped me out as a kid!

  3. Yes, they did look like they had huge eyes. For a while, I was out every morning snipping branches to get the caterpillars off the plants. Still, they managed to decimate our tomatoes. First time I'd seen them and I hope they don't come back this year.

  4. I'm pretty sure you just have to pick those off one at a time and smash them. That's why my grandpa did, anyway.

    Ewwwwwwwwwwwwwww

  5. I knew there was a reason we avoid gardening! I
remember the year we worked so hard in putting
in a garden and all for naught. The bugs reaped
more from all our efforts than we did!

  6. Those caterpillars will keep on eating the leaves until there is nothing left.

  8. Yucky!

You could almost put a saddle on the thing and charge for rides;)

Another one of those creatures I'll have to ask God, why, when I see him.
